00 Overview

The topic of Microsoft Design Expo, 2020 was "Health Care." Our team (UW, MDes) of four design masters explored for four months a design solution for mental health care suitable for a society where future telemedicine has become common.

How can we design a mental health care system solving spatial, temporal, linguistic, or cost-related constraints?

Design Solution

A blockchain health data cloud increase the security and anonymity of personal health information

An AI assistant; Viva interprets and manages health information and increase information accessibility by communicating in natural language.

01 Defining Project

Research Methods


& New opportunities

This project started with extensive literature, market research, and interviews. Through wide medical field research, journey map, and Persona simulations, we were able to land in the telemedicine field, and through interviews with medical experts and background research, we were able to settle in the field of mental health for undocumented immigrants. 


  • Interview: five medical professionals (primary doctors, telemedicine providers, therapists, etc.) and a specialist at a telemedicine mental counseling service company.

  • User Survey: User reaction about telemedicine in various nations.

  • Literature Research

  • Market research: Current telemedicine care service provider and their operating systems in various countries


In addition, legal, technical, and cognitive changes by COVID-19 increase Viva's persuasive power.

  • Expanded insurance coverage for telemedicine

  • The possibility of care beyond the border between states

  • The development of technology for accurate telemedicine

  • Improve people's awareness of telemedicine

02 Design Solution

Blockchain Health Date Cloud

- Data Protection

Personal health information is protected by using the characteristics of a blockchain in which individuals have encrypted information little by little without a centralized management entity. 


- Data Collection

Depending on the characteristics of digital information that do not have any spatial or temporal constraints, you can save your health history without restrictions on the nation, state, or language.

Viva, AI assistant

- Patient Side


Before you meet mental health care giver,

Viva, the AI therapist assistant, pairs you with an available therapist based on conversation with you. The conversation is in natural language but Viva can pick your symptoms and do a simple diagnosis what kind of treatment and expertise you need, just like the simple survey in the hospital before you meet a specialiest. 

During the meeting with health care giver,

This character mimics your facial features to keep your identity anonymous to your therapist. But allows your counselor to recognize your body language and facial expressions when conversing.

After the treatment,

Viva will talk to you via phone call, text, etc to confirm your mental treatment schedule and to check your feeling.

- Care Giver Side


Before you meet patient,

The personal token number provided by the patient helps to check personal health records and make accurate diagnosis.

After the treatment,

Through Viva, patients can be continuously contacted and followed up.

03 Conclusion

Viva is now a privacy mental health care service targeted at undocumented immigrants, but expects to provide services to a wider range of people in the future.


Artificial intelligence assistant, Viva, will be a friend who can contact you anytime when you are depressed, just like one personality. And you don't need to worry about this friend tell your secret to other.
